A Doll’s House

Henrik Ibsen

A Doll’s House is a three-act play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It premiered in Copenhagen in 1879 and was published that same year. The play narrates the story of Nora Helmer, a wife and mother who struggles with her marriage and role in society. The play’s tragic realism and questioning of traditional social and gender roles caused controversy. Originally written in Danish, initial translations changed the play’s ending to be more sympathetic. It wouldn’t be until 1889 that the play was performed as written in London and Broadway. The play is widely considered an essential feminist work and is one of the most performed in the world today.
