Hamlet, or, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a drama and tragedy by William Shakespeare, written c.1599–1601 and first printed in 1603. Set in Denmark, the play follows the story of Prince Hamlet who, after being visited by the ghost of his dead father, seeks revenge against his uncle, Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet’s father in order to seize his throne and marry Hamlet’s mother. It is Shakespeare’s longest play and most performed, and is considered among the most influential works of literature, exploring themes of grief, revenge, and madness. It contains some of Shakespeare’s most often quoted lines and soliloquies.
